HARROGATE Town manager Simon Weaver has announced his first signings at the CNG Stadium this week and revealed to fans more are on the way.
It’s been a busy time for the boss who took over the Town hot-seat last month.
Weaver has had to build a squad from scratch with the vast majority of the 2008/09 squad leaving the club at the end of the season along with previous gaffer Neil Aspin.
Now the boss is eager to add the spine to his new side before they start their pre-season training in the coming weeks.
Goalkeeper John Lamb (Ossett Town), attacking midfielder Dave McTiernan (Newcastle Blue Star), left-sided player Leon Scott (Whitby Town) and former Lincoln City centre half Matt Bloomer have all signed.
Former Carlton Town attacking midfielder Dean Gent became the latest addition to Weaver’s revolution on Thursday, and Weaver is also hoping to add a high scoring striker today. Weaver has also welcomed close friend Kevin Sharp as his number two, the former Leeds United man most recently coaching with Wigan Athletic.
“I’m excited with these new players,” said Weaver.
“All of them are fresh and ready for the challenge.
“There will be more to come who I will be able to name next week too, it’s been a busy week but everything seems to be coming together.
“Kevin’s a great acquisition too. He’ll be getting himself fit for the start of the new season but the plan is for him to be the eyes on the touchline if I’m playing.
“We’ll work closely together and he’s a great guy to get on with.
“He loves his football, he’s got great passion for the job and I’m sure he’ll be a success.”
The manager has revealed he’s holding talks with fans’ favourite Richard Marshall and David Syers to keep them at the club but confirmed Jon Hedge will be leaving and that Danny Lowe could also be on his way.
However with pre-season training fast approaching Weaver is expecting a host of players to come down and try and impress the new management team.
“We’ve got about 25 coming down already which is great,” he added.
“We’ll have a look at them and see. The important thing is we get the players fit for the start of the season and then they’re ready to go.”
The new manager is also eager to build up a relationship with the local community and hopefully harness the melting pot of players produced by the local teams and schools.
“We’ll be open to anyone this season who wants to come down or feels they can give it a go,” he said.
“We want this to be a family club. “What better feeling would it be for a local lad from Harrogate to come and play for their home town club?”
