HARROGATE Town have signalled their intent for a shot at Blue Square North promotion next season by signing former Sheffield United and current professional boxer Curtis Woodhouse.
Boss Simon Weaver couldn't hide his excitement after his latest capture who he believes is a major transfer coup for the club.
The 29-year-old midfielder will divide his time on the pitch with training and bouts in the ring something the boxing welterweight and Weaver will be working closely on.
"Curtis is a fantastic signing for the club," said Weaver who welcomed Woodhouse to Harrogate on Thursday.
"It's a big capture and everyone has been working hard to bring him here.
"It's a big day for Harrogate Town and I'm sure he'll be a success at the club.
"He's got that fighting mentality you want in your side.
"That's what I've been looking to bring in and I'm delighted he's come here.
"He's 29 now and he's in his prime. He's got boxing pride and that's something he'll bring to his football."
Woodhouse came to prominence during a successful progression through the ranks at Sheffield United playing 104 times after starting his career at York City.
His impressive performances for The Blades earned him a call-up to England U-21s before a £1 million move to Birmingham City in 2001.
From there he moved on loan to Rotherham, before playing for Peterborough, Hull City and Grimsby Town.
Woodhouse changed direction in 2006 when he decided to try his hand at boxing having had no previous experience.
Training under former British featherweight champion, Gary de Roux he made his debut on September 8 of that year beating opponent Dean Marcantonio on points at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
He returned to football with Rushden & Diamonds during the 2006/07 season and finally moved to Mansfield Town in 2009 where he played 12 times for The Stags alongside his boxing.
"Curtis will still be boxing and we'll be working with him for training and matches," continued Weaver.
"His next fight is on July 4 so we've got to be flexible with his training.
"But that won't stop him playing and we're all fully behind his boxing."
It's been another busy week for Weaver who has also worked hard to bring former Wetherby Road captain Simon Sturdy back to the club from Eastwood Town.
He's also added young striker Ollie Ryan from Boston United, utility man Simon Harrison who plied his trade with Weaver at Ilkeston Town last season and new physio Matt Unwin.
It brings Town's summer signings to 11 including Weaver as player/manager and assistant Kevin Sharp.
Added to this are Dave McTiernan, Leon Scott, John Lamb, Ollie Ryan, Matt Bloomer, Dean Gent who were announced last week.
"It's all coming together nicely and I'm really pleased with how it's all coming together," said Weaver.
"I've been told that Simon Sturdy was a bit of a club hero down here.
"I think it's another good signing, he's steady eddie as a defender, good in the air and composed on the ball.
"I'm really pleased to have him at the club and pleased he agreed terms.
"Simon Harrison is a player I played with last year at Ilkeston. He's only just turned 20 and as an individual he's a player you want in your side.
"He's quite a shy lad off the pitch but when you get him on it he's completely changes.
"He's got a great will to win and he's versatile which will certainly help us.
"Ollie is also a great signing for us. He's a proven goal scorer and that's someone we've been looking to bring in."
Physio Unwin will replace Steve Bradbury who has decided to stand down due to personal reasons after three years with the club.
"Matt and I were born on exactly the same day so hold a special bond there," added Weaver.
"He's a great physio and good to have him on board."
Meanwhile Weaver revealed Town's pre-season schedule will be announced in the next week with some tough fixtures on the horizon.
He's also working hard to bring in more players over the coming weeks.
Meanwhile Town fan John Ward said Weaver's appointment at the club was like "a breath of fresh air."
He added he's looking forward to seeing younger players get a chance in the forthcoming season.
lTOWN have recently learned they have beaten off the likes of Barcelona to win the European Cup thanks to the help of a young Norwegian manager.
However, it appears there may be one small snag....for more turn to page 5.
