IT'S official: Harrogate Railway will play Harrogate Town in the FA Cup next Saturday at Station View, so cue a media machine already whirring into action eight days before the big showdown.
The whole town is talking about the game - arguably the tie of the round - a week before kick-off, confirmed on Monday after Rail’ secured their place in the fourth qualifying round thanks to Saturday’s 3-2 win over UniBond Premier rivals Matlock Town.
Rail’ chairman Rob Northfield has since appeared head to head with Town chairman Bill Fotherby on the BBC Non League Show this week.
The two have also confessed to non-stop phone calls and texts with interest generated by the 63-1 draw hitting fever pitch.
In the Rail’ corner, the club are preparing for their biggest home game since the Bristol City FA Cup Second Round clash in 2002 and boss Vinnie Brockie insists Town was the side he was after.
The Bristol game attracted a crowd of 3,500 plus and now members from both factions are hopeful of a similar attendance next weekend.
The draw means at least one Harrogate team has the chance of meeting a League One giant in the First Round Proper and more importantly, of getting their hands on the £10,000 prize money.
“I got two texts, the first from Dave Shepherd saying we’ve got Town but I didn’t believe him but then James Riley sent another one to say we’ve drawn them at home, I really couldn’t believe it,” said Brockie.
“First of all we wanted a home draw and then it was in the lap of the gods after that.
“It’s the one I definitely wanted but now somehow I’ve got to put it to the back of my mind and concentrate on the two games we’ve got before then.
“It’s really captured the imagination of the town and I’m sure there will be a large crowd down here to support.”
Chairman Northfield has expressed his delight at the draw and truly believes his Rail’ outfit can pull off a victory against their bitter rivals.
“My reaction to the draw wasn’t the same as everyone’s reaction,” said Northfield.
“I thought it was a fantastic draw as soon as it came out, it’s great for the town as a whole and hopefully it will attract a big crowd for it.
“Vinnie let me speak to the players before the game for ten minutes on Saturday and I was telling them to go out and be positive.
“I’ll be doing the same before the Town match and I believe there’s no reason why we can’t go out there and beat them.
“We’ve just got to go out there and show no fear- we have nothing to fear against them.
“We showed that when we beat a strong Matlock side who beat Telford in the last round of the cup.”
Meanwhile preparations for the tie are already in place at Station View with Northfield communicating closely with Town chairman Fotherby to iron out any match day problems.
At the moment the game won’t be all-ticket but Northfield feels the situation could change if a huge attendance is expected.
“We had a meeting at Harrogate Railway this week about the arrangements to get the ground ready for the game,” continued Northfield.
