HARROGATE Grammar School U-15s rugby team have reached the final eight of the Daily Mail Vase after a fine run of results.
They will play Midlands outfit Bromsgrove School in the quarter-finals with the prize of a final place at Twickenham at stake.

The competition is open to every school in the country, independent as well as comprehensive and Grammar are the only comprehensive left standing, having beaten Stockport 28-15 in the last round.

Stockport went ahead with a penalty but Grammar levelled through a kick of their own before a try from Hudson put them 8-3 ahead at the break.

In the second half Stockport came out of the blocks hard and soon had Harrogate on the ropes, a superb break by the home scrum-half looked a certain score until Parish made a cracking tap tackle to halt him.

Harrogate’s forwards then stood up to a series of close drives by Stockport especially Caton, J.Simmons and Townsend, and just when it seemed they had survived a scrum ball against the head was moved out to their wing who scored in the corner.

However the referee judged that the head removing tackle as he scored was slightly high and awarded a penalty try and with the conversion the score moved to 8-10 in Stockport’s favour.

Not to be out done Harrogate quickly gained a penalty and a sweet strike by Clough moved them a point ahead

Harrogate continued to dig deep though as Clough chipped a deft ball over the advancing defence for Swain to run on to and from 50m out he outsprinted the defence to score in the corner.

This was quickly followed by a solid scrum on the home 22 for Hudson to go blind and score his trademark steamroller try.

This made the score 21-10 and surely the game safe; but with five minutes to go Stockport’s elusive scrum half broke through to score .

However Grammar had the final say with Swain grabbing a late try and Clough a conversion to seal the win.
