THE unseasonable 60-mph gales of the weekend made for tough racing and Steve Smales was unfortunate to suffer terrible conditions for a BBAR qualifying 100 mile ride for the British Best All Rounder in the EDCA event at Norwich.
The Harrogate rider found himself having taken 1.55 to cover the first 50 miles in ever worsening conditions, some five minutes behind schedule. Struggling to control his machine, Smales chose to abandon and start the long journey home.
Things went much better for Oliver Pearce who finished second to accomplished rider Keith Murray in the Ferryhill Wheelers Spoco 20m TT.
Pearce recorded 52:52, only 12 seconds slower than the winner. This places Pearce third in the hotly contested Tyne & Tees SPOCO league, only four days after a solid fourth in the Cleveland wheelers 18.5m TT Spoco event.
