GERMANY may be more renowned for their Formula One drivers and top class footballers but now they can add a promising cricketer to that list after the success of one young man from Hamburg.
Florin Claussen, who currently lives a stone's throw away from Bilton Cricket Club, only picked up a bat and ball six months ago when his first introduction to the game was a net session with Follifoot CC.
After some intense lessons from his cricketing friends the 20-year-old donned his whites and played his first ever competitive game for Bilton 4th team at home to Boroughbridge.
The match in Division Seven of the Nidderdale League three weeks ago could be the first ever appearance by a German in the league's long history.
After making one run with the bat, seven days later he starred with the ball scalping two wickets to help guide his side to victory over West Tanfield.
"I've really enjoyed my time since I've been here," said Flo.
"Before I came over I'd never played cricket but now I've found out that there are three clubs back home in Hamburg so I might try to play for one of them when I get back home.
"I'm the first ever German to play cricket for Bilton and that's made me feel very proud."
Flo also thanked his new friends and housemates for introducing him to the game.
"A lot of people have helped me out and I'm very grateful," he added.
"I'd like to say a special thank-you to Michael Halmshaw because he introduced me to the game and if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have met all these great people over here.
"Without him I wouldn't have enjoyed England as much, he made me feel welcome here and hopefully one day I'd like to come back."
