THE Hornblower's Big Band Ball was held at Ripon Spa Hotel. The black-tie event was attended and enjoyed by around 100 people, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Ripon, several councilors and other distinguished guests.
The evening started with a four-course dinner which was followed by a fundraising auction and traditional dancing.

The auction of lots donated by local businesses was conducted by Samantha Curry, the hotel's managing director, and raised about £3,500, which will go to the Mayor's Appeal for Saint Michael's Hospice and Ripon Scouts and Guides. Music was provided by Yorkshire's The Manhattan Sound Big Band and their guest singers, totalling more than 20 performers. A surprise feature was the performance during a break in the programme by Barry Sellers, who played guitar and sang the ballad The Wakeman of Ripon. He and George Pickles, the Hornblower, are hoping to have it produced as a CD and marketed to lift the profile of the city of Ripon, and to raise more funds for local charities.
