Harrogate Grammar School held it's first ever presentation evening for their sporting stars. Sixth former DAN BIRCH writes about the night;
Harrogate Rugby Club hosted a luxury evening of glamour and entertainment as it sported the first ever Harrogate Grammar School Sixth Form Sports Presentation Evening.
Miss Louise Walsh who first raised the idea of the event and was the main organiser behind it and hosted the evening.
All of the pupils who had represented HGS at rugby, football, netball, hockey and basketball were invited to attend the evening with all members receiving half colour or full colour awards depending on the number of games they had played for their respective school team.
With the boys looking dapper and the girls dressed beautifully, everyone including the staff sat down for the three course meal which was provided by a catering team who should have been proud of the brilliant food they produced including a range of exotic cakes for dessert!
Then after tummies were full, the evening began in style with the speeches.
The captains of each team were asked to speak out individually in front of the seventy strong crowd about their season along with the coaches.
The captains that had to speak were: Dan Birch (Basketball), Tom Joel (Football), Grace Dunlop, Alison Ross (Netball), Dan Metcalfe, James Audsley Beck (Rugby) Jallyssa Williams, Lauren Sewell (Hockey). Each speech was fantastic and a credit to the teams and coaches.
After the speeches, each squad was called up to receive their medals. Then came the guest speaker for the evening; Mr John Callard, an ex-rugby professional who played for Bath Rugby Club.
His words of wisdom were greatly appreciated by the crowd before the Team of the Year award was presented.
Not surprisingly this went to the netball team who's fine squad of players reached the National Finals in Bournemouth two weeks ago finishing a creditable fourth in their section.
A series of muscular endurance fun and games hosted by Captain Barker followed before the big one, the Sports Personality of the Year.
The winner was Grace Chattaway for her achievements in Athletics with the runner up going to Rugby player, Phil Swainston who is an England Youth international and is in the Harrogate RUFC first team squad.
The evening was one of great success and everyone will hope that this event will now be held regularly for the Sixth Form. A night out on the town followed for nearly the entire crowd.
A big thank you to Miss Walsh for efforts in organising the event and a big thank you to the whole of the PE Department for putting up with us and also for being great teachers.
