Need for hazard perception test is brought home

Rossett sixth former TIMOTHY DIXON brings the next instalment in his driving column, 'Getting used to traffic.'
Over the last two weeks I have done many things to improve my driving.
Last week was driving from my house all the way to where I usually start and carrying on down my usual route.
This week however I decided to start in Knaresborough, and as it was the bank holiday there was extra traffic around.
I firstly started in a suburban area as it was the only area to change around, I then drove to an exit where I had to pull out onto the main road which at this time was not too busy.
This road I was going down went out towards a Morrisons and is the road that I usually finish on, due to me not knowing this road I was a bit apprehensive at the prospect thankfully my dad does know the route.
After passing thought two more roundabouts I was on the old A1.
I carried down until I noticed there was a 4x4 pulling a trailer with what I can only describe as a wild west wagon in its back.
Due to it being fairly slow and the road being clear it was a good test of my overtaking ability.
After I overtook I noticed I took way too long to get back in my lane so it was good practice.
I carried back down this road until I reached a roundabout where I turn around, but last week as I slowed down so I could take the roundabout at a good speed, a car forgot to indicate.
So when I thought it was going down past me it cut across my lane, thankfully I slowed down to a speed where it was easy to avoid, just slow down more.
Well as I came back up the A1 to where I pass over it on a bridge I was taken by surprise as a police van had parked in the first bit of the entrance.
This made me pull up very tightly, thankfully it just meant I was a bit too fast when stopping at the junction at the top.
From here it was down through some villages and back onto the old A1 where I carried on up towards the road that links the old A1 and the gravel pits road.
When I pulled onto this road as usual I had a car right behind me but as an added bonus two cyclists and a blind hill, so I waited till I could see that nothing was coming and pulled out giving them room and I glided past them.
After getting thought the next village I let the 4x4 past as it's not nice to have a car on your tail.
The next village we had gone through earlier as the road leads to the supermarket, well by now the road was busy.
I let the first car past but I pulled out well before an old sports car was anywhere near me.
I carried on down this road with a lot of traffic built up on it by now, I carried on down to Knaresborough where most of the cars pulled onto the streets.
But as I pulled onto a road connecting the main Knaresborough road and the road I stop on, a 4x4 stopped right before an island in the middle of the road.. ..making the chain of cars pulling onto this road an extra hard thing to do so as not to hit the 4x4 or the island.
Thankfully I pulled up and changed over but it made me think 'this is why they have hazard perception test as nothing is clear cut in life and you have to be alert to these things.'
