The latest in a series of concerts by Platform 4 took place in the chapel at Harrogate Ladies College on May 18. St Aidan's Sixth former SOPHIE FENNERTY reviews the concert;
Five young musicians from Harrogate and the surrounding areas were given the opportunity to perform to an audience without the pressure of competition.

Opening the concert was Vicky Jones, 18, who studies oboe at Junior RNCM and is currently a pupil at St Aidan's High School.

Her programme included pieces by Telemann, Schumann and an Italian Dance by Dring. Vicky's mature and rounded tone complemented her programme well and she really captured the style of the pieces.

Next to perform was Catherine Bentley who has only been playing organ for four years. She performed a wide variety of pieces for organ from Baroque composer John Stanley to Edgar Arro, a 20th century musician.

She attacked the pieces with vigour and the Baroque pieces particularly allowed Catherine to show off her super technique.

Sam Gillespie, 11, who plays clarinet and is a pupil at St Aidan's School was next to play and he played Grand Slam by Benny Goodman and Scaramouche Suite for clarinet by Darius Milhaud. Sam's performance was entertaining and he really took to the style of the piece.

18 year old tenor, Dennis Maher, a pupil in Y13 at Leeds Grammar School, then performed with a selection of contrasting pieces including Du bist die Ruh, Schubert and Bring him Home from the musical Les Miserables.

Dennis really connected with the audience and performed each piece bringing out the emotions accordingly. He interacted well with his accompanist and his faultless diction gave a thoroughly enjoyable performance.

Jessica Wilkes, 17, who studies flute at Junior RNCM and is currently a pupil at St Aidan's, brought the concert to a close with Francois Bourne's Carmen Fantasy. Jessica caught the mood of this piece perfectly and played it with gusto to create a truly flawless performance.

Thank you to the accompanists Jonathan Eyre, Janet Frazer, David Darling and Beryl Pankhurst and congratulations to all the performers for a truly enjoyable concert.
