An exciting day for Harrogate High School
FOR the past fortnight
students at Harrogate
High School have been
campaigning and voting
for their student
president. Sixth former
and student researcher
JACK TAYLOR writes
about the results.
TUESDAY, May 13 was an exciting day for all at Harrogate High School. The announcement of Student Voice president was to be revealed.
Over the last two weeks Y11 and Y12 students and members of Student
Voice have been working hard trying to persuade students and staff of the school to vote for them.
Each candidate had an agent working for them, who helped design and distribute leaflets, and put up posters around the school.
The candidates that nominated themselves for election were, Abi Nelson; Y11, Giorgina Medori; Y12, Joanna Birch; Y12, Matthew Steel, Y12, and Sarah Barker; Y12.
The afternoon soon set in, and the votes had been counted to reveal the winner of Student Voice president and vice president. Congratulations
to Matthew Steel who was voted to be Student Voice president and Abi Nelson; vice president.
Claire Kelley, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
for Harrogate and Knaresborough joined Student Voice on the
afternoon.
She said: "The count was the culmination of hard fought campaigns
to become Student Voice president and vice-president and Matt and Abi can take great pride in being elected by the whole school.
"There was an atmosphere of friendly and good-humoured rivalry that bodes well for future working relationships in the team.
"Congratulations to all the candidates, their agents and also to those who helped run the election so efficiently."
We will now effectively be run by Student Voice instead of staff, however staff will still have guidance over decisions made.
Student Voice members will have their own set of offices in school, which will be shared equally between each working job role, for example peer mentors will have a share of the office where they can hold Drop in Sessions with students who need advice and support.
Student Voice participants can now concentrate on developing the
school in a co-constructive way, listening to the voices of students
and using the minds of the teachers.
It is the voice that is heard at Harrogate High School, and developing
the ethos throughout the school is of paramount importance.
The students will still thrive in researching and implementing new methods of learning, as well as supporting the students of Harrogate
High through their job roles.
The candidate results were:
Matt Steel got 151 votes, Abi Nelson
got 131, Giorgina 62, Sarah
Barker more than 50, and Joanna
Birch more than 30.
