Nine-year-olds Ellie Phillips and Jessica Bassitt have been so upset by what has happened to the earthquake stricken country, that they have organised a coffee morning to help raise money.

They have been busy baking all week, and have a splendid display of coffees and cakes for villagers to enjoy in the Hampsthwaite Village Rooms tomorrow.

Both girls, along with Ellie’s mum Annette, have been going door to door in Hampsthwaite to encourage villagers to go along.

Ellie, of Killinghall, said: "We saw the horrible pictures on the TV and in the newspapers, which felt a bit sad and we wanted to do something about it."

Jessica, of Ripley, who spent last Saturday baking cakes with her grandma and grandad, said: "The children in my class are happy that we are doing it, and they are trying to help as well."

Waitrose in Harrogate and Booths in Ripon have both given free teas and coffees, and the Nelson Inn in Hampsthwaite has donated goodies for the day. There will be a tombola as well, and overall the girls hope to raise £250 for the Haiti appeal.
