"IT IS fantastic to be performing in the open air on a summer evening," says piano maestro Jools Holland, who is promising an evening of pure boogie-woogie when he and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra head to Ripley Castle for an outdoor concert later this month.
The appearance is part of a nationwide tour, and he says he loves "the opportunity the tour gives to perform in varied locations". He continues: "On a really hot summer's evening it is the best feeling, it lifts the spirits.
"So I hope people will come and swing with us. It is such a magical feeling being in an amazing location, creating fantastic music and feeling the crowd join in."
The Rhythm & Blues Orchestra has evolved from the initial seeds in 1985 when Jools and his drummer Gilson Lavis began touring as a duo, into a disciplined 17-piece band which has performed across Britain and Europe, including at Canterbury Cathedral, Kew Gardens and the Glastonbury Festival, as well as filling the Albert Hall each Christmas.
They have performed with a who's who of top artists, and Holland says he could not pick a favourite but adds: "There are still lots of people I would like to work with, but I would have loved to have played with the late Dinah Washington or Bessie Smith – unfortunately, it is too late now!"
Holland's special guests for the Ripley concert will be Ruby Turner and Dave Edmunds.
Turner's new album is in a gospel style inspired by her work with Holland and the "up-beat, lively, feelgood" gospel music they have incorporated into their sets together.
She says the Ripley audience can expect a mix of R'n'B, jazz, boogie-woogie, blues and many more styles, adding they will be performing many of their collaborations from the five albums their have worked on together.
Edmunds, too, says he is thrilled to be working with Holland and will be performing songs he's had chart success with and also some he's always wanted to do with a full orchestra.
Jools Holland and guests are at Ripley Castle on Saturday, July 25. The audience is encouraged to bring their own chairs, rugs, cushions and picnics for the picnic-style concert.
Gates open at 5pm and the support artists take to the stage from 7.30pm. Advance tickets are £32.50, £15 for children aged five to 15, under fives free. Call 01603 660 444.
