From: Kevin McNerney, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Harrogate and Knaresborough Labour Party, Harlow Terrace Harrogate.
THE most important feature of last week's results for our town is the election of Mr Brons as the MEP. Normally representatives elected from whatever party go on to represent the whole electorate but in this case there can be no doubt that Mr Brons w
ill only seek to advance the interests of a very small section of our society.

The BNP received nearly 2000 votes in the Harrogate district and over 100,000 in Yorkshire as a whole.

That is not to say there is the same numbers of racists though the BNP is clearly a racist party. Most of the people who voted BNP are mistaken but not racist.

The next five years before the next European election must be about showing those who voted for the BNP what the party is really like and that racism, believing that discrimination on grounds of race or nationality, is simply daft.

Ridicule of the BNP is going to be the best weapon in trying to convert the 100,000+ that what they want out of politics can be achieved without hating non-whites.

While BNP is a vile party those who voted for them need to be met with respect and a set of arguments that exposes the stupidity of the BNP's policies. I am sure many in Harrogate will feel a little ashamed that our town has produced such a representative but we must hope and pray that he is turned out at the earliest opportunity.
