I WOULD like to raise awareness to the ever disappearing gravestones in Ripon Cathedral church yard.

What is there to see other than broken and dismantled headstones? Nothing, just a large expanse of grass. We all know they have safety issues over the stability of some upright stones, but what about the ones which are already flat and hidden under the grass? There are hardly any visible now; what do remain are disappearing fast.

I remember when we could read about who lay at rest and have spent time to look at dates, names and the varied ages. What about the visitors and families trying to trace ancestors? I am deeply disheartened at the fact the Dean and Chapter have allowed this disrespectful act to take place. It’s not as if they have to find the funds to uncover them, as they already employ groundsmen. I would ask that action is taken to uncover these vital parts of history and bring back the respect to those who have died.
