THE letters page of this paper recently included an invitation from a member of the library staff for members of the public to involve themselves with the colours of cushions and carpets in the new library building.
It is a pity that North Yorksh
ire had not heeded the wishes of Harrogate's Planning Office and Council, when they gave themselves permission to carry out the current vastly expensive scheme of reconstruction. I regret that I have severe concern at the direction the library has taken in recent years, and believe it is time they became accountable. It alarms me that the county councillors appear to take such little interest in the plans of the cranks and faddists responsible for this extravagance, that they have agreed to the introduction of a cafe.
At a time of recession, it is reprehensible to use public money to fund a cafe that will take business from Harrogate's commercial cafes who do not have the advantage of being funded from the rates. The Library is surrounded by excellent cafes. Sunwin House, opposite the library gardens in Raglan Street, has a large and very efficient cafe and restaurant. The junction of Victoria Avenue and Station Parade, opposite the library, has the Cafe as part of the larger business. The back of the library is diagonally opposite to the stylish Cafe Marconi, and two more excellent restaurants exist within yards of the library's back door. I suggest that Harrogate people want their library to have books and information, not cheesy scones.
