YOUR correspondent Mrs Oxley asked about the naming of the Dress Circle in the Royal Hall.
She is absolutely correct in saying that the first level balcony in a theatre is, by convention, known as the Dress Circle and is the area in which evening dress was formerly required.
The second tier of balcony (which the Royal Hall does not have) is known as the Upper Circle, and the third level of balcony (where it exists) is normally known as the Gallery (or the Gods). The naming in the Dress Circle in the Royal Hall, therefore, follows conventional theatre practice.
The seating areas at ground floor level in the Royal Hall auditorium are called the Grand Hall (the flat area) and Grand Circle (raked seating area) rather than the more conventional Front Stalls and Rear Stalls nomenclature used in other theatres.
The original names have been retained in the restored building although they are rather idiosyncratic and unique to the Royal Hall .
