WHILE walking round Christ Church in High Harrogate I noticed the memorial to Betty Stevenson YMCA, Croix De Guerre avec Palm, her name also appears on the Cenotaph war memorial.

Whilst I am sure her story is well known to many in Harrogate, I had not heard of her.

I did an internet search and found that a book, written by her mother in 1920 is available as a free download from the American Libraries Archive Site.

I would encourage anyone with an interest in Harrogate history or inspired by books of courage to read this account.

Betty was a driver in France during the First World War for the YMCA, just after her 21st birthday in May 1918 she was killed in an air attack.

She was buried with full military honours in the soldiers cemetery in Etaples.

She was awarded a posthumous Croix de Guerre avec Palm by Pertain.
