Education is
'nurturing'

MUCH as I share Dr Mike Matthews' sentiments about the quality of the experience available to young people from the teaching staff of Harrogate High School, (Letters, June 27) I write to dispel the common fallacy that the etymology of the word 'education' is to do with 'leading out'.
The word Dr Matthews has in mind is 'educere' which, if it were the source of the English word, would mean young people spending their formative years undergoing a lengthy spell of 'eduction'.
There is, however, a perfectly respectable, though typically later Latin verb, 'educare', meaning 'to nurture'.
I much prefer the notion of the young people attending Harrogate High School being 'nurtured' by the experience to that of their being 'led out', which would probably result in precisely the opposite effect!
