THE issue of the Vodafone mobile phone mast which the firm wants to erect a mere 60 metres away from Greystone School has raised a interesting example of local democracy.
The governors and parents refused to believe Vodafone's assurances that the mast was quite safe and sided with the increasing body of evidence that suggests that cases of leukaemia have occurred near sites where masts have been erected.
The effect of Audrey Blackburm's campaign has been dramatic. She now has the support of our Ripon councillors and has even got Harrogate Borough councillors on her side, not because of Ripon's children but from the 'aesthetic' viewpoint: their view of the cathedral would be spoiled as they approach on the A61, which shows that you CAN win them all.
