THE Gascoigne Gallery in Harrogate is to exhibit the work of Britain's most creative and perceptive landscape artist, Joseph Mallord William Turner.
The exhibition, which is entitled Coast of Yorkshire - Original Engravings and runs until June 1, offers an opportunity to see some of Turner’s original engravings.
Turner was born in 1775 and by the age of 13 he had already been admitted to the Royal Academy Schools and a year later was exhibiting his first watercolours at the Academy.
His Liber Studiorum, started in 1807, designed by Turner to demonstrate with great clarity the range and variety of his powers, still stands as a testament to his genius.
As a collection of prints they were able to reach a far wider audience than his paintings ever could and must still rank as one of the greatest sets of mezzotint engravings ever produced.
l The Royal Parade gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am till 5pm or by appointment.
