THE North Yorkshire Chorus is performing in Thirsk tomorrow, Saturday for the first time since 1998.
The concert, which is in St Mary’s Church, includes a programme set around Requiem by French composer Gabriel Fauré. Other items include Mass No. 2 in G by Franz Schubert; a setting of Psalm 29 by Edward Elgar; and Blest Pair of Sirens, a poem by Joh
n Milton set to music by Charles Parry.
“These pieces give a wonderful overview of the tremendous flowering of choral music in Europe in the 19th and early 20th centuries” said Greg Smith, Chorus director and conductor for the concert.
“They are great fun to perform and just as exciting to listen to.”
The Chorus will be accompanied by Andrew Christer, playing the newly-restored organ in St Mary’s.
Well-known soloists in the Fauré Requiem will be Anna Belward (soprano) and Simon Deller (baritone), and they will be joined in the Schubert Mass by David Pisaro (tenor).
“We can’t believe it is ten years since we gave a concert in Thirsk,” said Tony May, chairman of the Chorus. “We are delighted to be returning, and we are bringing a range of splendid choral music which will have immense appeal and fully make up for the long absence.”
Tickets, priced £10, are available on the door or in advance from the White Rose Bookshop and Hambleton Books in Thirsk and Greensleeves in Northallerton. Under-16s free if accompanied by an adult.

A week after giving this concert the Chorus will be setting off for Northallerton’s twin town, Ormesson sur Marne in France, where members will be taking part in two concerts, repeating music from the Thirsk concert alongside other work. This is the fifth time the Chorus has travelled abroad.
