VEGETABLES will grow in a Harrogate district park for the first time, after pupils from a local school received permission to create a special plot at the Valley Gardens.
The pupils at Western County Primary School have planted their produce in a special garden set aside for them near the bandstand.
Kate Dawson, the council's parks development officer, said that vegetables make lovely horticultural displays.
"We have never had a vegetable garden in our public parks but we want to promote healthy living and we thought why not in the Valley Gardens?"
If the crops grow successfully, the school expects to enter the Harrogate Allotment Show in August.
The initiative will also work towards Harrogate's entry in the national "In Bloom" awards.
The 49th Annual Harrogate Allotment Show will take place between 11.00am and 4.30pm on Sunday, August 16 at the Sun Pavilion in Valley Gardens.
