HARROGATE'S biggest egg and spoon race is back for 2009 with the return of the Big Picnic to the Valley Gardens.
Last year's fundraising day saw more than 6,000 people head down to the town-centre park to witness a new world record attempt.

Despite 727 entrants, Harrogate fell short by a bare 132 racers to take the crown as the capital of the biggest ever egg and spoon race.

This year organisers have pledged a return of the race for July 12, but with the paperwork involved have decided to ditch the record attempt.

Kirsty Minshall said: "We have decided not to go along the world record route so that people could just have a fun day.

"Last year it was literally going for three or four hours with all the kids trying to get to the end, surrounded by dozens of smashed eggs.

Sunny

"This year will be even bigger and better, with lots more attractions and entertainment for all. It's a great day for all the family."

Dozens of stall-holders and acts have already enrolled, from hat and circus workshops to classic cars and drumming classes.

There is to be a Punch and Judy show, stilt performers and a bouncy castle, and St Aidan's High School Band have also signed up.

Mrs Minshall said: "After last year, everybody wants to be involved. We are hoping it will be sunny again, fingers crossed.

"It's all free, and all money raised will go to the Woodland Children's Ward at Harrogate Hospital, for an outside canopy for the children."

Last year's event raised more than £2,500 for the Harrogate Hospital and Community Friends, to pay for the canopy.
