HUNDREDS of people headed to Ripley over the bank holiday weekend for the village's annual Scarecrow Festival.
This year the organisers marked the village's historical links to boars by creating the world's largest patchwork pig and running a pig-themed scarecrow competition.
In 1355, King Edward was saved from a wild boar by one of Sir Thomas Ingilby's ancestors, and pigs have been part of Ripley's history ever since.
There were 28 scarecrows in this years event with 'Amy Swinehouse' being voted as the best overall scarecrow winner by the public.
Prize winners of this year's quiz were:
R Ogle of Valley Mount, Harrogate, who won a Hutchinson meat voucher.
C Matthews of Wedderburn Road, Harrogate, who received a Ripley Boars Head voucher.
H and J Durkin (11yrs and 4 yrs) of Ripon won an Ripley Ice-Cream voucher
E and P Simock (13yrs and 9 yrs) from Starbeck have a family Ticket into Ripley Castle.
The Biggest Patchwork Pig was successfully completed by Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, consisting of 814 squares and coming in at a 7ft by 4ft by 3ft pig.
Over 300 people took part in guessing the name of the pig. R Mayo of Shelly Court successfully guessed 'Rainboar' and won the prize of a hamper donated by Hopkin-Porter.
Julie Hainsworth, an organiser of the event, said: "The Scarecrow Festival was a great success, even though the weather was inclement at times.
"Many thanks to everyone who took part and enjoyed their time at this event.
"We are now starting to get ready for next years Biggest Pig – making it double the size of this year and entering it for the Guinness Book of Records 2009."
