YOUNGSTERS at Rossett School built emergency hurricane shelters as part of an engineering information day.
The Rapid Response Engineering Challenge was a chance for the Y9 pupils to work with a team from the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) who visited the school to deliver the day-long event.

Given the bare minimum of equipment and tools, the 60 strong group of students split into teams to build emergency shelters strong enough to withstand a hurricane – and teachers and students alike enjoyed testing them afterwards with buckets of water.

The winning team, Cable's Barmy Army, received vouchers from Lynden Cable, the ICE regional education coordinator, and all students received a certificate and goody bag at the end of the day.

"It was a really successful and worthwhile day," said Helen Driscoll of Rossett School.

"Launching buckets of water at the shelters either confirmed or contradicted the ideas behind the students' original plans and designs – and was great fun, too!"
