A HARROGATE School has won a prestigious Languages and Film Talent Award (LAFTA) for its video clip, 'Why study languages?', which highlighted the fact that real life doesn't have subtitles.
The group of students from Harrogate Grammar School were presented one of eight prizes at the glamorous LAFTAs awards ceremony at the British Library in London last Thursday.
The students first heard that they had won an award in the summer, when they were given the prize of an all expenses paid trip to Castilla y Leon in Spain, sponsored by the Spanish Tourist Office and the regional government of Castilla y Leon.
During the trip in August, the students went mountain biking in Navarredonda de Gredos adventure park, visited the stunning cathedral in Salamanca, and went to see where fighting bulls are bred at Faenas Camperas.
The LAFTAs competition, run by CILT, the National Centre for Languages, invited young people aged 13-21 to make two minute videos demonstrating the importance of languages.
The winning videos were chosen by a celebrity judging panel, which included comedian Eddie Izzard, broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald and Sky Sports regular Guillem Balague. Twenty five clips were shortlisted, and eight were awarded prizes at the ceremony.
The Harrogate Grammar students joined teenagers from around the country who travelled to the ceremony to find out whether they would win one of the prizes provided by sponsors including Eurostar, the Spanish Tourist Office and the French Embassy.
Jamie Gutch, a teacher at Harrogate Grammar School said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for our students. They enjoyed taking part in the competition itself even before hearing that they had won a major prize.
"This kind of competition could be the key to unlocking the creativity and fun that is always a part of successful language learning. Thank you LAFTAS – the trophy and certificate are already in the cabinet and all our students are excited about applying next year."
