CASH put aside for other uses is being used to set up a Homelessness Prevention Fund by Harrogate Borough Council.
The council had set aside £29,670 for appointing a rent co-ordinator and establishing a Rent Bond Guarantee Scheme.

The Homelessness Prevention Fund will enable the council to increase housing options for applicants, particularly in the private rented sector, says a council report.

Council housing chiefs say the action had proved a successful tool for reducing homelessness and use of temporary accommodation in other areas.

Using the fund, say the council, will reduce households in temporary accommodation, increase prevention figures and the number of homelessness applications.

In addition it would reduce the amount the council is spending on temporary accommodation.

An alternative option of not going ahead with the prevention fund would restrict the council's ability to meet their 2010 target of halving the households in temporary property.
