BUDDING gardeners at St Peter's Primary will soon be growing their own vegetables thanks to a helping hand from Yorkshire Water.
Volunteers from the company went to the school on Friday to dig a brand new vegetable patch where the youngsters can grow their own cauliflowers, leeks, and sugar snap peas.

The school, which already holds the healthy school standards status, will be developing a gardening club to help maintain the garden.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Phil Willis joined the diggers and talked to the students about healthy eating.

"For schools to have outdoor areas where children can gain hands-on learning experiences is very important in today's climate," he said. "Yorkshire Water's One Million Green Fingers campaign helps schools to address issues like healthy eating, the environment and sustainability in a fun and engaging way.

"Three schools in the Harrogate area have already benefitted from this project which is making a real difference to primary school children."
Paul Griffiths, deputy head teacher at St Peter's added: "We greatly value the benefits of outdoor learning and are grateful for the support Yorkshire Water are providing in helping us with the development of our outdoor space.

"Over 60 pupils have been working directly with the volunteers today and many hundreds of children will benefit from it over the coming years."

Yorkshire Water's One Million Green Fingers Campaign aims to create hundreds of sustainable gardens in schools across Yorkshire over the next few years.

Local businesses including Crimple Valley Garden Centre, Jewsons, Wm Morrisons supermarket and Harlow Carr Gardens all donated materials which helped to create the new garden.
