POLICE have asked residents to report any ASBO breaches by a 23-year-old Harrogate man who will be released from prison on Monday.
Ex-Big Issue seller Shane Varela's convictions include injecting heroin on the number 36 bus, threatening people with drug needles, assaulting shop staff and being drunk and disorderly.

He also has convictions for five shoplifting offences, possessing drugs, carrying tools for committing crime, driving offences, including aggravated taking without consent, and breaching bail conditions.

Transdev Harrogate & District caught him using drugs on the number 36 bus from Leeds. He left his used needle on the back seat. He has also repeatedly ignored police warnings about begging on John Street.

Persistent offending

He was convicted of burglary last November after he was caught rifling through drawers and the till at the Orange shop on Cambridge Street.

He was sentenced to prison for 17 weeks and given an anti-social behaviour order due to his persistent offending.

PC Ed Rogerson, of Harrogate Police, said: "The conditions in this ASBO are intended to protect the public from Shane Varela's behaviour and to remove the opportunity for him to commit crime.

"A breach of any of these conditions would be a criminal offence for which Varela could be fined or sent to prison for up to five years."

ASBO conditions

The ASBO is valid until November 3, 2011, and states that Varela must not:

- Enter shops in the town centre , with the exception of Lloyds Pharmacy on Kings Road.

- Beg, or use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards the public.

- Possess an open container of alcohol in a public place.

- Enter Harrogate Bus Station within its shelter along Station Parade.

- Travel on Harrogate and District Transport bus services.

Anybody wishing to report a breach of the order should contact police on 0845 6060247.
