THE Harrogate Chess Club suffered some bad losses in two of its latest Yorkshire Chess League matches but this was somewhat ameliorated by the C teams drawn match against Calderdale C. The Harrogate A team lost miserably to Alwoodley A team by 2 points to 6. There was a solitary win from John Link and two compensating draws from Mick Stokes and Douglas McKerracher. This result may well affect the A team`s promotion chances in the League which is almost at a close.
The B team also had a bad loss by losing 1.5 games to 6.5 against the Sheffield C team. The Harrogate team could only manage three draws from Ian Hunter, Graham Wilson and Gordon Marks. Even so it has been a reasonably good season for the Harrogate B
team.
As already stated the Harrogate C team fared a little better than the other Harrogate representative teams by drawing its match with Calderdale C at four games all. Harrogate managed three wins from Andrew Zigmond (by default), Margaret Rowley and Malcolm McHugh with two welcome draws from Ranyl Hughes and Richard White. The team also welcomed junior Daniel Bliss to play his first serious team game and whose appearance helped to achieve the drawn result. New potential chess players will receive a welcome at the Harrogate Chess Club which meets in the Trinity Methodist School Hall, which is just off the Leeds Road near the Prince of Wales roundabout. It opens at 5.45pm and finishes at 10.00 pm. A Junior Section is now in being and meets from 5.45pm until 7pm and now has five members. It would be appreciated if anyone reading this column, who knows of any junior, lady or gentleman player who is interested in playing or learning to play chess, would ask him or her to get in touch with either Richard Tate 01423 522514, Jack Duckworth 565255 or Andrew Zigmond 538142.
