THE chief executive of Wetherby property developers Oakgate has raised £19,000 for a charity close to his heart after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
John Grantham was fund-raising for the Children’s Diabetic Unit at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, who are treating his 14-year-old son Barney.

The businessman completed the climb saying it was the toughest challenge he had ever undertaken.

He climbed Kilimanjaro via the hardest route, and two of his 12-strong team had to give up because of altitude sickness.

When he reached the summit after a gruelling five-day climb, he raised the Yorkshire flag.

John commented: “My first reaction, once I’d agreed to climb Kilimanjaro was – what on earth have I let myself in for?

“I had no idea it was going to be so tough, so draining and so utterly exhausting and physically demanding.

“But, my goodness, it was worth it”.
